The Committee would like to thank you all for your involvement in the 2008 Cross Bay Swim. As we all know the weather did not cooperate  to allow the swim to take place as planned on July 24th. This serves as a reminder of how fickle Mother Nature can be, and how fortunate we have been in years past to complete the Swim without complications. In lieu of the event we were able to hold a consolation party at Declan Quinn’s in Bay Shore. A great number of you attended and we all made the best of the situation. We all shared in the great food and the warm atmosphere as friends shared stories of years past, and the years to come!

There were quite a few swimmers who decided to swim in the days following to fulfill their commitment to swim the Great South Bay. Some swimmers joined later in the day on Thursday for a swim on the North side of the Bay, while others joined on the South side in the early hours of Saturday to swim to the Fire Island Light and back. There was even one swimmer who found a pool on the day of the swim to do the 5.25 miles! You are truly a group of very committed men and women, and your actions this year have truly shown the wonderful character of this event!

We owe a very big THANK YOU to all of you who were able to donate this year, despite the cancellation of the Swim. We were still able to raise a significant amount of money for Hospice Care Network through the continued donations of Swimmers, Kayakers, Sponsors, Volunteers and their families and friends. We will of course continue this event in the coming years, and are we looking forward to fielding one of the largest and most diverse groups of swimmers for the Cross Bay Swim in 2009!

Please be advised that the cancellation in 2008 will mean that we have a number of very competitive and angst-ridden swimmers already chomping at the bit to jump in next year. With that in mind, keep checking the website for updates, keep up with your training, and get your applications in as soon as possible next year! Thank you all for your continued support of this wonderful event and we are looking forward to seeing you all next year!
